Chapter Twenty-Three

I managed to get through my first appointment without giving away that I was still half asleep. Luckily, my client just needed me to confirm that her husband was cheating on her with one of her cousins. I gave her Wade’s number, since he was practically family now. It was good to have a local private investigator to refer my clients to. Normally, I had to send them to someone in another town who could gather evidence for them.

“Okay, spill the beans,” I ordered when she was gone.

The ghosts had been whispering together the entire time my client had been here. They broke out of their huddle and Jess drifted over to me. “It’s probably best if I show you,” she said and placed her hand on my arm.

Delving into her, I saw Aunt Janet and myself standing next to the cauldron. The brown fog rolled over us both and we went down within moments of each other. The fog had spread throughout the house. It had felled Grandma in the parlor, then had searched out Aunt Isabel in the kitchen and Eve in her bedroom. Inga had left for the night, so she and Courtney had been spared. I snorted out a laugh when I saw Satan had also been affected. The ghosts had searched the house and had found the imp sprawled near the back door.

“What are we going to do?” Reggie asked in a near panic when they returned to the conjuring room.

“Perhaps young Jessica should request Haydn Creighton’s assistance,” Bryce said as he joined them.

They spun around in fright. “You just scared ten years off my life, Jeeves!” Maryanne said in a scolding tone, somehow forgetting she’d been dead for several decades.

“Lilla won’t be happy when she finds out I asked Haydn for his help,” Jess said, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth.

“Diva hit her head on the desk when she collapsed,” Fran said, bending down to take a look at me. “She cut her forehead open and she’s bleeding.”

That was enough to decide Jess. She concentrated, then shifted location to the foreboding black Creighton mansion on the other side of town. She searched the house and found Haydn in his bedroom upstairs. He was sitting on an antique red velvet armchair that bore a startling resemblance to my blue ones. He was reading a book and had no idea she was there.

Seeing a notepad and pen sitting on his nightstand, my bestie zoomed over to it. I noticed the bed was the same black one from my dream two nights ago as she picked up the pen and wrote down a short message. Thanks to our link, she had enough power to rip the page off and to carry it over to Haydn.

The warlock started when the note landed on his lap. He read it, then leaped to his feet with a curse. He chanted and teleported himself away, but Jess beat him to our conjuring room by half a second.

Haydn took in
